ABOUT US

Some History of Sigma Beta Sigma

We are Sigma Beta Sigma, a local sorority on campus, and we were originally founded as a literary society in 1892, making us the oldest sorority on campus. Our home is the Susan B. Harris Chapel and it has been our home since the beginning, hence our nickname "The Susan B's." We officially transitioned to sorority status in 1967, our colors are purple and yellow, and our mascot is the squirrel.  Our purpose as an organization is to foster in the hearts of our members a love of christian fellowship and an attitude of good will towards others.

Over the years we have become a very diverse sorority, and although we were founded on Christian ideals and still keep that as our basis today, you definitely do not have to be Christian or fit any sort of description for us to accept you into our sisterhood. Currently we have 20 active members on campus and we are very involved with activities at YHC and in the community around us.

Some of the things we plan and host each year are sisterhood retreats, Boo Bash at Halloween, recently began Jolly Jam at Christmas various fundraisers (past events: fashion show, candy sales, campus t-shirt sales, duct-tape a sister, basket raffles, etc.), and various events that support our philanthropy for the year to raise awareness and money for donations. We also have our own spirit section at basketball games where we dec-out in purple to cheer on our men and women's teams (we actually won the spirit award from the purple out game for 4 years in a row)!

For the 2015-2016 school year our philanthropy was focused on S.A.F.E (Support in Abusive Family Emergencies) which is a local organization that helps victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. For 2016-2017 it was the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory. 2017-2018 school year our Philanthropy was the United Methodist Children's Home, and this year we have chosen LoveHimLoveThem.  They are a Haitian Orphan Choi

Susan's is also involved in many other small community service projects throughout the year that support our surrounding community. For the past 4 years we have won the school's community service award for having the most community service hours out of every organization!

We're very proud of our history and how strong we are as an organization on Young Harris' campus!

Sincerely,

The Susan B's
